Think and
Make Reading #1:
After reading all of the
different sections of this first reading, I found it extremely interesting how
they all sort of complemented each other. With By Design, I loved how he
related design back to a historical event in which it shows us that design is
everywhere. Also it shows how the design process can change and affect us. It
was very powerful and gave me a new insight on what design is. Then reading Toothpicks
and Logos, it also gave me a new perspective on what design is and how we
categorize it. One quote that really impacted me was “Design is
one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human and an essential
determinant of quality of human life. It affects everyone in every detail of
every aspect of what they do throughout each day.” It is so true and real, that
even though it seems so simple and a “duh” moment, I never really thought of
design like that. We are constantly redesigning and creating new designs for humans
everyday and will for the rest of our lives. Finally, I thought the book Understanding
Design was really helpful in understanding design in different contexts and
how we evaluate them in those contexts. After reading Understanding Design,
I wanted to read more of the book and I might just go out and buy it. Overall
the readings really did open my mind to how we define and look at design.
